Naked man running through snow steals and wrecks cop's car

The AP reports Philadelphia police chased a naked man through the city's slushy streets early Monday after he allegedly stripped off his bathrobe, bit an officer, then stole a police cruiser in an attempt to escape.

The man was captured after he smashed the cruiser into several parked cars, abandoned the vehicle and tried to get away in his bare feet.

The episode unfolded at around 1:30 a.m. when police were called to a block in North Philadelphia to investigate complaints about a person screaming in the street. Officers arriving on the scene said they found a man running about in his bathrobe in the freshly fallen snow.

The officers gave chase. The man shed his robe, then allegedly bit a female officer on the arm, climbed into her patrol car and hit the gas. He drove only a few blocks before crashing, police said.

Police did not immediately release the suspect's name. He faces charges including car theft and assault.

Terri Schiavo and the Soul of America
02.24.05 (7:37 am)   [edit]

Terri Schiavo and the Soul of America
By Lisa Fabrizio
February 24, 2005

It is often said by abortion supporters that a fetus is not a baby until it can survive independently outside the mother's womb. This is of course a specious argument since this 'survival' is not possible without the care and nourishment of others, either pre or post birth.

This is true not only of infants and children but of the sick, disabled and elderly as well. But if certain right-to-death groups get their way this week, you can add Terri Schiavo's name to the growing list of disposables for whom the simple act of feeding would make her life otherwise viable.

We live in a society where multi-billion dollar projects are cancelled or altered in order to protect certain animal habitats, and one that engages in Herculean labors to spare the lives of confessed serial rapists and killers like Michael Ross. Yet a family who wishes nothing more than to take home and care for their daughter--a woman guilty of nothing except maybe her fatal choice of a husband--may yet lose their battle for her life.

For those not familiar with Terri's case, in 1990 Terri Schindler-Schiavo collapsed in her home and suffered a ten minute loss of oxygen due to causes unknown. Her husband of six years, Michael Schiavo, although he reportedly knew CPR did not perform it and his wife suffered severe brain damage which left her badly handicapped.

Two years later, when Michael won a malpractice suit against Terri's doctors, he claimed he needed the million dollar-plus settlement to care for her for the rest of her life. This caring ended less than five years later when, in 1998, Michael suddenly remembered that Terri had indicated to him shortly after their marriage that she would reject any life support should it someday become necessary.

Even though Terri never signed any living will-type document the Florida courts believed Michael's story and granted him guardianship of Terri even though he'd been living for three years with a woman with whom he was to have two children.

In 2001, Judge George Greer, a man who has reported conflicts of interest in this case, ordered Terri's feeding tube disconnected. This action prompted the Schindler family to begin their own round of legal proceedings and in the course of one, they discovered new evidence. A report of a medical exam done shortly after Terri's collapse seemed to suggest she might have been the victim of violence.

No matter what evidence the Schindler family has presented, Michael Schiavo, Judge Greer and noted euthanasia lawyer George Felos are determined that Terri must die for her own good. This despite numerous reports by nurses and others that she is a vital and responsive young woman of forty-one who smiles at and recognizes her family; regardless of the fact that her feeding tube is only inserted at mealtimes and she needs no other life support; even though she is a Catholic whose religion forbids euthanasia.

The lengths to which those who wish her slow death by starvation have gone are truly appalling. They have, at various times; refused medication for routine infections which could prove fatal if untreated; withheld dental and gynecological tests and treatments for periods of up to seven years; restricted visits from her family and worse, visits by her parish priest, even refusing to allow him to administer the Host during the Last Rites the last time her tube was removed, claiming it would constitute 'sustenance'.

That this case, if carried to its most ghastly conclusion, will become a legal precedent is as disturbing a tragedy as the execution of Terri herself. Worse than merely representing a culture of death begun by the abortionists; euthanasia, along with cloning and embryonic research, represents a belief that certain humans should control the making and taking of innocent life.

There are thousands of people with brain-impairments of varying degrees alive today around the world and I'm willing to bet that the great majority of their loved ones cherish every day they've been allowed to care for them. Some people cannot understand that what would be an unbearable burden to them is a blessing to others.

One wonderful woman who recently passed away devoted most of her life to the home-care of her severely impaired fifty four-year old son rather than leave him in an institution. Another family lovingly rotated monthly care of their brother until his death at the age of eighty-one.

Such devotion to and belief in the sanctity of all innocent life is at the core of the Terri Schindler-Schiavo case and those who wish her death this week know it. This is a fight that has been coming for some time that will shape the future of our country in as profound a way as we have ever known and one that should be fought fiercely.

Those who think that man should be an architect of life and an arbiter of death are using a disabled woman's plight to foist their notion of 21st Century morality on the rest of us. The fate of Terri Schiavo will be a measure of their success or failure. It is tragic that freedom is now on the march all over the world yet here at home, the most basic of all human rights may be lost.

Harry Reid - Like A Puppet on a String
02.18.05 (7:11 am)   [edit]

"Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has come under fire the last few days for making false statements regarding the judicial nominees that President Bush has recently re-nominated. One such comment referred to the hostage nominees as already being "turned down by the Senate." Anyone who has followed the issue knows that the judges in question were never given an up or down vote - due to Democrats' unprecedented filibustering. Perhaps Senator Reid should be forgiven since it appears that an outside source is actually writing his talking points.

"A popular blog, Demagogue, compared the public statements of Senator Reid and Ralph Neas, the president of the extremely liberal People for the American Way. In a February 15 Washington Times article, Ralph Neas had this to say about judges: "To replay this narrow and completed debate demonstrates the Bush administration's failure to craft a positive agenda for the American people." On the same day the Washington Post also had the exact same quote, but it was uttered by Senator Reid. How is it that the leading Democrat in the Senate uses the exact same talking points as the head of one of the most left-wing interest groups in America? Good reporters should ask Senator Reid the truth behind this story, though I would suggest they look closely to see if it is Ralph Neas' lips moving."

Social InSecurity II
02.18.05 (6:28 am)   [edit]

The following is from Paul Jacob's column "Let's Panic Later?":

"I'll start worrying about saving for my retirement, maybe tomorrow.

"After all, it isn't really a crisis. I mean, when you are 30 or 40 or even 50 you still have some years left to save for retirement.

"So why get all agitated?

"(Kinda)like Social Security, we're told there's no crisis. Why, it's solvent until 2042!

"Of course, that really means it is NOT solvent (which is easy to see if you plan to retire in '43).

"Trouble is, the money we pay into Social Security isn't working for us like retirement funds would in the private sector. Instead, for decades, the money paid into Social Security not spent immediately on retirees has been spent by the members of Congress on pet projects that insure their re-elections. Congress has borrowed trillions from the misnamed Trust Fund. The "trust" fund is full of IOUs.

"If you had been borrowing from your own pension for years, what would you do? Get three jobs to pay all the money back? IOUs are one thing; IOMEs, another.

"What will our government do? Make us all get three jobs? Or, slash spending (and pay the IOUs from a surplus)? Don't hold your breath or you'll never make it to retirement.

"We can act now, to prevent the looming crisis, or else adopt a "don't worry, be happy" attitude and let the crisis break later (on someone else's watch) at a far greater price, with deeper pain and suffering for both retirees and workers.

"What is your choice? What will the politicians choose?

"This is Common Sense. I'm Paul Jacob."

Harry Reid - Out of Touch With Nevada
02.17.05 (2:01 pm)   [edit]
Harry Reid sat for an interview with Alan Colmes which aired on "Hannity and Colmes" on Fox News channel last night. Since Sean Hannity did not participate in this interview, Alan Colmes lobbed a bunch of softball questions at Harry "Pinky" Reid. It was like two good buddies sitting down for a friendly chat.

Harry Reid is so out of touch with Nevada he made a slight error when questioned about last November's election results. For those of you not familiar with Nevada, Clark County (Las Vegas) and Washoe County (Reno) have the largest population of Nevada's 17 counties. In fact, Clark County's total population exceeds the population of the other 16 counties combined. (Clark County = 1,715,337: Total state = 2,410,768: source: Nevada State Web Page)

Back to Pinky ... Reid claimed John Kerry won both Clark and Washoe counties yet lost Nevada because of the rural vote going overwhelmingly to Mr. Bush, with at least one of those rural counties voting 90% for Bush. That's just plain wrong. Mr. Kerry did in fact lose 16 of 17 Nevada counties, and not a single one of those rural counties favored Bush by more than 78%. Kerry managed to win Clark county on the strength of well-organized union members and the influx of mostly liberal voting California transplants.

If Pinky Reid can't get even a simple and easily verified thing like election returns right, how can he be trusted to get anything else correct? The plain truth of the matter is that Harry Reid is out of touch with Nevada - and out of touch with mainstream America. He's living the high life in his $750,00 condo in D.C. and could care less about Nevada and America. All Pinky ever worries about is winning the next election.

"I just wonder how many people would pay attention to preparing for retirement if they didn't have the mistaken idea that the money they are now forced to contribute to Social Security would be adequate to live on when they are no longer working. For the life of me I cannot figure out why it is the job of government, through the nation's taxpayers, to worry about every citizen's old age. Somebody tell me, please."

Rambling, or Stray Thought on a Gray Day
02.15.05 (8:20 am)   [edit]

Okay, I'll admit that I am a Pink Floyd fan from 'way back. I own almost all of their recorded works, including concert videos, CD's, and old (very old) 33 1/3 LP's. In my opinion, for whatever it's worth, David Gilmore is one of the best on guitar, and Pink Floyd's live shows just can't be beat.

So Pink Floyd has two concert video's, "The Delicate Sound of Thunder" and "Pulse", which were taped on their last two concert tours. These two concert videos' are available only on VHS. Which bring me to my question: Why won't Pink Floyd allow these video's to be released on DVD? Does anybody know?

Neal Boortz Reports
02.15.05 (7:19 am)   [edit]

The following from Neal Boortz (2/14/05):

"OK .. here's the deal. It's January 15th; the MLK Holiday. They're having a civil rights march in Columbus. A woman writes a letter complaining about the conduct of a Columbus police officer during the march. Did the officer insult anyone? Did he yell racial epithets? Did he abuse or shove someone? Nope, none of the above.

"So, just what did the officer do? Well, he ate a banana. That's it. The police department sent around a snack van to give the officers who were working the march something to eat. This particular officer chose a banana. . . . So the complaining woman sees the officer eating a banana...and she's 'deeply offended.'

"OK...you're on the edge of your seats now, aren't you. You know there's more to the story, and you want me to fill it in, right? Sorry...that's pretty much the story; except, that is, for the woman's reasoning. Here you go. Since it was a civil rights march, and since most of the participants were black, the woman felt that the officer eating a banana was actually trying to humiliate the black marchers by somehow relating black people to apes, since apes are reported to enjoy bananas.

"I'm not joking, folks. Believe it or not, this woman has such a huge racial chip on her shoulder that she actually thinks that if a white person eats a banana in the presence of a black person that white bigot is somehow sending the message that he considers black folks to be apes. Now wouldn't this woman just be a delight as a next door neighbor? Wouldn't you absolutely love to have to work closely with her? Every day you would have to pack your lunch oh so carefully. No bananas. Oh, and I'd be really careful about having any watermelon in that fruit cup."

Amazon
02.14.05 (6:57 am)   [edit]

I love the Amazon web site. It's a great place to browse new releases in music, books, and movies. Their "Look Inside" feature for books is wonderful.

This last weekend I was searching Amazon for a couple of items and noticed a new message at the top for the screen. It seems they are now offering a new subscription shipping service. For "only" $79.00 per year they will give you unlimited free two-day shipping on more than 1 million items. You also can opt for overnight shipping for $3.99 and share your subscription with four family members.

The goal of this new program is to get people like me to shop more often at Amazon. Good idea, but since they already offer free "super saver" shipping on orders of $25.00 or more I wonder how many customers will go for this new deal. While the super saver shipping is a little slow, anywhere from five to ten days, I use it on every order. I can't imagine paying $75.00 per year just to get my stuff in two days. Maybe I'm just a cheapskate!

Smoking
02.10.05 (8:02 am)   [edit]

What's the problem with Weyco, Inc., firing employees for smoking off the job? This is nothing new and it's barely newsworthy. A column in "USA Today" from Feb. 8th claims at least 6,000 employers refuse to hire smokers.

In case you missed it, Weyco, a medical benefits company in Michigan, fired six employees when they discovered they were smoking away from work, on their own time at home or elsewhere. Weyco says it is trying to lower health care costs and improve employee health in general.

All of a sudden people are wondering if a company has the right to dictate what their employees do when they are not at work. What will be next, they ask. Fast food junkies? Too much fat and cholesterol in those Big Mac's! Spend too much time in front of the television or computer and not enough time exercising? Sorry, we only hire physically fit people!

The National Organization for Women has preached for years that a woman has the "right to choose" what to do with her body. NOW, of course, applies this mainly to the right to choose an abortion without government interference.

But I like the concept of an absolute right to choose. Indeed, why should an employer be able to forbid an employee from smoking in their off hours? Or having a couple glasses of wine? A beer or three? Or smoking a little pot now and again?

Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening has been common for years. This practice, to the best of my knowledge, has gone unchallenged. It's only logical that employers would expand this screening to include any off-duty behaviour they deem unacceptable. When you willingly give up one right for the so-called greater good, why complain when even more rights are taken away?

Virginia State and Underwear
02.09.05 (6:18 am)   [edit]

Looks like Virginia lawmakers have too much time on their hands. The following is from the "Washington Times" this morning:

Virginia lawmakers to the state's youth: Pull up your pants or pay the price.
D elegate Algie T. Howell Jr. doesn't want to see underwear hanging out of the back of your pants, and most lawmakers yesterday agreed with him. The House voted 60-34 for his bill, which would impose a $50 fine on anyone whose boxers, briefs or thongs peek above their pants or skirts.
" It's not an attack on baggy pants," said Mr. Howell, Norfolk Democrat. "To vote for this bill would be a vote for character, to uplift your community and to do something good not only for the state of Virginia, but for this entire country."
I t's not clear if the fine would apply to plumbers, carpenters or other laborers who have problems with low-riding pants. The bill states the fine would apply to those who display their below-the-waist underwear in a "lewd or indecent manner."

So folks, if you are going to visit the great state of Virginia, be sure to keep those undies tucked in. No sense in giving them $50.00 of your hard-earned bucks.

Even Dead People Can't Escape Music Industry Lawsuits
02.08.05 (8:58 am)   [edit]

The music industry has made an all-out effort to stamp out all those "music pirates" trading songs on the internet. To protect their monopoly they are now going after dead people also. From the "Boston Globe":

CHARLESTON, W.Va. --Gertrude Walton was recently targeted by the recording industry in a lawsuit that accused her of illegally trading music over the Internet. But Walton died in December after a long illness, and according to her daughter, the 83-year-old hated computers.

More than a month after Walton was buried in Beckley, a group of record companies named her as the sole defendant in a federal lawsuit, claiming she made more than 700 pop, rock and rap songs available for free on the Internet under the screen name "smittenedkitten."

Walton's daughter, Robin Chianumba, lived with her mother for the last 17 years and said her mother objected to having a computer in the house.

"My mother was computer illiterate. She hated a computer," Chianumba said. "My mother wouldn't know how to turn on a computer."

Chianumba said she faxed a copy of her mother's death certificate to record company officials several days before the lawsuit was filed, in response to a letter from the company regarding the upcoming legal filing.

"I believe that if music companies are going to set examples they need to do it to appropriate people and not dead people," Chianumba said. "I am pretty sure she is not going to leave Greenwood Memorial Park (where she is buried) to attend the hearing."

Looks like it should be an easy win for the music industry -- they win by default when the defendant is a no-show for court.

Harry "Pinky" Reid - Dumocrat Crybaby
02.08.05 (7:09 am)   [edit]

[image]Stephen89702_12103 75645.jpg[/image]

Poor Harry! Those nasty republicans are telling the truth about his record as a senator and Harry is mad. Steaming mad.

From the "L. A. Times" today:

Standing in the Republican-led Senate, Reid called on President Bush to repudiate and pull a "hit piece" against him by the Republican National Committee.

"What they want to do is just like [what] they did to Daschle," Reid said.

Harry! Wake up!! Your record in the senate is public record -- open for one and all to see and report.

A simple question for you, Harry. If the RNC article was such a "hit piece," why don't you tell us what the truth really is here? It's easy - and gets great headlines - when you whine and cry about how abused you are, but you remain silent about the central issues raised by the RNC. That's because your record speaks for itself. You are everything the RNC says, and more.

There is an old saying, Harry, that states if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. For you, Pinky, that should read: If you can't stand the truth of your public record, speeches, press releases, and comments, you don't belong in public office and most especially don't belong in the position of senate minority leader. Maybe it's time you resign your senate seat, sell your $750.000.00 condo there in D.C. and move back to that little town in southern Nevada where you were born and raised. At least then nobody would pick on you, you poor little crybaby.

Super Bore ... err ... Bowl Sunday
02.07.05 (7:30 am)   [edit]

As expected, new england wins and the casinos clean up. A quote from todays Reno Gazette Urinal, I mean Journal - The Reno Gazette Journal:

More than $80 million is bet in Nevada annually on the Super Bowl.

“This year’s (betting) business has been at least as big as last year’s, if not bigger,” said Donald A. Bourcier, assistant manager at the Hilton Race and Sports Book, though the counting had not been done. “The people love football, they love the Super Bowl, regardless of who is playing. It’s tradition. The big money started coming in on the Patriots, and continued and continued, up until today.”

Since most bets are placed against the so-called point spread, which was -7 for new england, the casinos made tons of money from all that "big money" wagered on the new england weenies. Somehow the racebooks and casinos always make the big bucks on sport betting. Maybe enough to influence the outcome of games?

Super(?) bowl Sunday ... here at last. Today the new england pats will be re-crowned the world champs of pro football. (big yawn) Millions, if not billions, of dollars bet in racebooks all across Nevada -- what a waste. (another big yawn) Maybe next year some exciting teams will play in the big event ... then again, maybe the winner has already been picked by the big money machine .....

Harry the Reid aide arrested
02.05.05 (6:50 am)   [edit]

I am no fan of Senator Harry the Reid - dumocrat from Nevada. This piece from "Roll Call" shows ol' Harry (or "Pinky" as he is known to his friends and neighbors in his hometown) has picked some real winners for his staff.

An aide to Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was arrested on the West Front of the Capitol for disorderly conduct during President Bush’s inaugural address last week.

The aide, Nathan Ackerman, is a television producer on the Senate Democratic Communications Committee — an organization that was folded into Reid’s new communications “war room.” About 20 minutes into Bush’s speech, Ackerman, 36, and another man held up a sheet that said “No War.” According to a Capitol Police report, Ackerman and another suspect “were blocking the view of the audience and they were engaged in a verbal dispute with members of the audience.”

The report states that Capitol Police officers told Ackerman and the other suspect to relinquish the sign or be arrested but that “neither complied and both were placed under arrest.” The report did not name either suspect, although Ackerman’s identity was confirmed with the Capitol Police.

Ex-Turtles guitarist jailed in Nevada

DAYTON, Nev. (AP) — Al Nichol, lead guitarist for The Turtles whose 1960s hits included “Happy Together,” has been sentenced to six months in jail for drunken driving while on probation for a previous DUI conviction.

“I don’t know what to tell you, Mr. Nichol,” Justice Court Judge William Rogers said Wednesday. “It’s sad that you’ve taken a successful life and turned it into the town drunk.”

At the time of his May 2004 arrest, Nichol’s blood-alcohol level was 0.311, well above Nevada’s legal limit of 0.08, according to court documents. At a Jan. 12 court proceeding, a test done at the courthouse showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.19.

The Web site for The Turtles lists Nichol as a paint company representative in Nevada.
